This year was no exception, we went back to Sovereign Hill for my favourite thing about Ballarat winters, the Winter Wonderlights.
Every year Ballarat puts on Christmas in July events and the famous Sovereign Hill joins in. They run the incredible Winter Wonderlights for about 3 weeks including the school holidays, and they have so many special themed activities and decorations. On top of all of the regular attractions like gold panning, mine tours, theatre shows, gold pouring and so much more… there are Christmas decorations everywhere, lights and a huge decorated tree, as well as Christmas themed activities for the kids, and most importantly, the snow! There are snowfalls scheduled during the day and one in the evening, which are coordinated with the sound and light show and it is the kids absolute favourite part of the whole event every time.
I must confess that we were at Sovereign Hill only a few weeks earlier and did so many of the activities. We found a ‘family’ of gold (according to Ella, because we found 5 little pieces) at the gold panning and played in the bowling alley, saw the gold pouring, visited all of the animals (including the adorable miniature donkeys!) and watched the lollie making demonstration, so this time we stuck to the Christmas themed activities. All of the little cottages are decorated with lights and trees, with wreaths and bows, and they are open to go inside which the girls loved. The school building is open as well and there was a line up of kids having fun ringing the bell in the school yard.
I’ve spent so much time at Sovereign Hill over the years and I discover something new every time. Doing it with the kids adds a whole new element of incredible things to explore and experience. I could easily spend days here which is great because every day pass includes a return ticket for the following day if you didn’t manage to fit it all in.
As part of the celebration, Sovereign Hill and a number of leading tourist attractions in Victoria have joined together and are running an incredible promotion (during Sovereign Hill’s Winter Wonderlights event), for people to win a year of Family Fun, including Family Passes to the Melbourne Zoo, National Gallery, Scienceworks, Phillip Island’s Penguin Parade, Sovereign Hill and a whole heap more. The prize is valued at over $2,000. Click on the link below for more information x
If you’ve never been then this is the perfect time to go, and experience the magic of the Christmas theme, without the school holiday crowd!
